Founder and President Dylan Waugh

Dylan Waugh lives in Baltimore, Maryland. He first visited Nicaragua during his junior year at The College of William and Mary, when he traveled with his church over spring break to volunteer in an orphanage. After graduating from William and Mary with a history degree, Dylan felt called to return to Nicaragua, where he stayed for almost four months. During that time, he met a group of children who begged for money on a street corner. He wanted to help them return to school and reach their potential in life, so he decided to start VISEDAL.
After returning to the United States, Dylan earned a journalism degree from the University of Maryland, and he now works as a writer and editor at a consulting firm. He enjoys baseball, running, reading, and spending time with family and friends.

Vice President Daniel Schutrum-Boward

Daniel Schutrum-Boward is from Baltimore, Maryland and currently studies Spanish and Latin American-Iberian Studies at Bard College in New York. He first started to volunteer with VISEDAL when he was a sophomore in high school. Since his first trip, Daniel has gone back to Nicaragua at least once a year. After graduating from high school, he spent a month in Managua while serving as VISEDAL’s summer intern. The internship afforded him the opportunity to build stronger, closer relationships with the scholars and their families, as he made frequent visits to their homes and schools, while giving English and computer lessons. During this time, he was also able to explore Managua, making new friends, and experience its undoubtedly unparalleled cuisine. In fact, his experience in Nicaragua and his interactions with its people, along with his high school Spanish class, instilled a passion for perfecting the Spanish language, traveling and immersing himself in Latin American cultures.
Country Director Esmir Calero Calderon

Esmir Calero Calderon grew up in an orphanage. He was always a strong student, and received an opportunity to go to UCA, one of Nicaragua’s best universities. He majored in Agricultural Engineering and graduated in 2008 at the top of his class. He and Brad Johnson were roommates for eight months, and became great friends. Esmir was brought on in 2008 to handle things on a local level. He's been with us ever since and has developed strong friendships with all VISEDAL children.
Esmir finished up his thesis project helping local farmers, and hopes to one day own a farm and provide employment for many people. He loves to explore and travel, and his life’s goal is to give back to Nicaragua. He's an example of success, and we are excited to have him with us.
